Cel End of life decisions with profound ethical implications complicate medical decision making in intensive care units (ICU), trouble patients and families and challenge public authorities. There is an urgent need for more transparency and a Europe-wide harmonisation of standards. This project will compile empirical data on current end of life decisions and their ethical background in ICUs throughout Europe. The data will be compiled by ICU staff in 16 countries organised in 5 European regions, using a questionnaire developed and validated during the project. The empirial data will be analysed to construct a multi-actor cross-cultural social map that provides a taxonomy of the ethical values of the actors involved. The analysis will include a sociological correlation study and a standard statistical analysis. Empirical data and analysis will be used to initiate a consensus building process amongst European ICU professionals and to develop recommendations for policy makers. The work will be performed by a consortium of ICUs and analysts specialized in ethics, law, and sociology of medicine.
