Groundwater polluted with complex mixtures of pollutants form a major threat for European drinking water resources. The permeable barrier technology is a sustainable in situ system to reduce risks associated with polluted water flowing in the direction of groundwater resources but is not suitable for plumes containing mixtures of pollutants. This project aims at developing a Multifunctional Permeable Barrier, which combines different principles of barrier technology, i.e. the removal of pollutants based on both physico-chemical (chemical reductive dechlorination/sorption) and biological activities (biofilm on carrier material) to treat mixed polluted plumes. The project foresees the development from lab scale to pilot scale of the system, the selective enrichment of specifically designed biofilm communities, the characterisation of the microbial populations and of the pollutant removal/degradation pathways.
