To the worldwide problem of the use of toxic chemicals to control soil-borne pests, no adequate durable alternative exists for the major European arable crops. The project aims to contribute to sustainable production systems by developing a durable resistance management strategy. The Q-organisms Meloidogyne whitewood and M. Flax will be used as a model, as they are an economic threat. The objective will be achieved by integrating expertise in breeding, dermatology, botany and molecular biology, novel by its European dimension. The work includes: identification and incorporation of resistance in important arable crops, study of durability of the resistance, and optimising of production systems by rotation schemes. Main results are: resistant germplasm, characterised pathogen isolates, reliable selection methods/tolls, knowledge on resistance stability, molecular markers, genetic maps, and advice on improved rotations.
