Cel Scallops are highly priced seafood products. Production in Europe does not meet the market demand, resulting in considerable import from Asia and other non-European countries. The great scallop (Pecten maximus), naturally found along the coast from Spain to Norway, is the most valued. Fishery has depleted stocks and scallops will increasingly be supplied through aqua culture. Cultured scallops go through production phase before harvesting. In the transition between, phases, handling and transport are often necessary. This can affect scallop quality and cause production losses. Currently there are no reliable quality criteria for scallops before marketing. The main goal of the project is to improve the quality, growth and survival of scallops in production, emphasising on handling and transfer between production stages. Stable and predictable supply of high quality scallops both to growers and consumers is a necessity for continued growth and financing of scallop aquaculture.
