Usability Engineering Requirements for IBC

Cel

This project was a pathfinder project in the area of usability engineering. It targeted the important issues and produced a framework for investigating usability engineering requirements.
The project collated and analysed existing data and theories. It performed 2 types of analysis: analysis of the communication activities characteristic of integrated broadband communications (IBC), and analysis of human communication characteristics relevant to IBC.
Communication characteristics of IBC included an analysis of existing communication applications and tasks, and a review of published survey data on uptake and usability. From the results a taxonomy of communication activities was designed which can be extrapolated to IBC.
Analysis of human communication characteristics required a study of developments in the psychology of communication. This directly influenced the development of the taxonomy referred to above. The taxonomy and the psychology of communication were focused on particular issues to enable the specification of usability metrics and an application dependent allocation of function between IBC system and IBC user which was consistent with the information processing characteristics of both system and user. This allocation could then be used to define a user system dialogue model.
Technical Summary
