The Interaction between Automotive and Supplier Industries

Cel

The TIBAS project focuses on the identification and development of an advanced application to be enabled by IBC in the field of the Automotive Industry. It will identify IBC requirements and take account of multiple and remote contributions from component suppliers in the design process of new vehicles, using a telemarketing concept.
The main aim of the research was to develop an advanced telemarketing application based on a thorough analysis of the requirements of automotive industry. Integrated broadband communications (IBC) requirements were identified multiple and remote contributions from component suppliers in the design process of new vehicles were taken into account. It was planned to run the application state of the art data processing hardware ultimately connected by a wide area broadband network.

As a result of the research a solid base of user information crucial to the development of an appropriate integrated system has been derived from indepth user interviews and analysis, resulting in the validation, refinement and enrichment of the original proposed scenario.

A series of services have been identified to support the industrial users' requirements and the relevant hardware and software has been evaluated to provide as much of the required functionality as possible.

A local asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) trial has been successfully completed.
Technical Approach

An advanced telemarketing application is being developed based on a thorough analysis of the requirements of Automotive Industry. The application will run on state-of-the-art data processing hardware ultimately connected by a wide area broadband network. The consortium will validate the resulting experiment through practical case studies and assess its viability in an operational user context.

It has been decided that most of the experiment components will be available products in the market place and/or as experimental items obtained either from the project members of from other parties contributing to the RACE Programme. In particular, the project intends to exploit any results available from the RACE Phase I which would contribute to the experiment requirements.

Key Issues

The TIBAS consortium comprises a very strong user representation including car manufacturers, component suppliers as well as the principal players in the key areas of telecommunication and information technology and is therefore able to address all of these areas.

Expected Impact

The project creates awareness that reduction of design-to-production time scales can be achieved, by giving access to an electronic market place of supplier products, thereby improving the productivity in the European automotive industry.
