Combined MSW-Biomass energy transformation plant for various European conditions

Cel

Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) and biomass from urban vegetation, agricultural residues or non-food production have a significant potential as energy sources for electric energy and heat production. Gasification seems to be the emerging technology because of its lower environmental impact and higher energy efficiency respect to incineration and landfill. The possibility of managing in the same plant MSW and agricultural biomass has the advantage of a constant supply throughout the year and offers the opportunity in the future to substitute increasing fractions of MSW, that could be collected and valorised separately, with the biomass production from marginal land areas that will be incentivated to convert to cultivations for energy production. The project objective is the feasibility evaluation of a full scale gasification plant, located in a well-defined area, and the extension of the results to other typical European conditions. The study will be operated referring to the location selected by the regional waste plan for the future waste handling unit of the Municipality of Catania, in the Sicily island, Italy. The plant size will consider two gasification technologies: circulating fluidized bed and slagging gasifier. The proposed techniques will be evaluated in technical, economic, occupational, environmental and marketing terms. A comparison between the two technologies will be produced. The diffusion potential of a combined biomass+MSW system of this type will be assessed.
