SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES FOR MACHINE CONTROL AND CONDITION MONITORING

Cel


Substrate materials for thick film hybrid sensors have been investigated and their properties characterized. For sensors operating in temperatures up to 1500 C, aluminium oxide substrates offer the best combination of properties and availability.

Piezoelectric composite thick film pastes have been developed which are suitable for screen printing of pressure transducers. These materials are compatible with hybrid designs in which the sensing element is integrated with the signal processing electronics.

A range of temperature sensing thick film pastes has been evaluated for use in hybrid sensors. Nickel has a higher temperature coefficient than platinum, but has a tendency to oxidize and must be stove enamelled. Platinum temperature sensors offer the advantage of being suitable for high environmental temperatures up to 1000 C.

A liquid level sensor has been developed which uses hybrid technology. It comprises an ultrasonic transducer, a thick film temperature sensing element, and the immediate processing electronics. The liquid level is calculated from the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse, and compensation is made for the fuel temperature and fuel tank shape. An optical vibrometer suitable for use in areas where there are high levels of electical interference has also been developed. It is based on amplitude modulation of a micromachined cantilever and a frequency response, to +/- 0.5dB of 20 to 1800 Hz has been obtained.

Digital signal processing has been extensively investigated, and a range of general purpose algorithms developed. These are particularly useful in applications in which ultrasonic signals require processing by means of deconvolution or inverse filtering. An IMS A100 transputer based system has been investigated for processing ultrasonic signals from an ultrasonic ranging system. It has the ability to range and identify objects using broad bandwidth ultrasonic transducers.

An ultrasonic level sensor based on planar hybrid techniques was developed. The sensor is suitable for use in automobiles and includes a thick film temperature sensor and processing electronics.

An optical vibrometer based on micromachining techniques was successfully developed. The sensor is capable of detecting vibrations in the frequency range 20 to 1000 Hz with a sensitivity of 1.0 dB.

Algorithms were developed for improved range resolutions and ultrasonic object recognition with ultransonic pulse-echo signals. These algorithms were developed and simulated on a desktop computer and a Micro VAX II. They were also implemented on an 8-bit microprocessor, and for fast applications on an Inmos A100 transputer based system.

Ranging systems, utilizing broad bandwidth transducers and digital signal processors or microprocessors were developed which were capable of simple object recognition. A system was implemented in a demonstrator robot.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP SENSORS AND SIGNAL CONDITIONING ELECTRONICS WHICH CAN BE BUILT INTO MACHINES TO ALLOW MONITORING AND CONTROL AT LOW COST.
TWO MAIN LINES OF WORK ARE BEING PURSUED - DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIAL TECHNOLOGIES AND OF SIGNAL ENHANCEMENT METHODS.
