Child immigration project

Cel

The growing presence of so-called 'second generation' and native born children of immigrants has added a significant new dimension to the already complex and difficult task of countering the inequality and social exclusion which face immigrants within the European Union. The Project proposed herein is aimed at providing a new and targeted comparative approach in order to increase inclusion and equality and, in particular, what we term 'well-being' of this component of European society.

The Project examines a problematic which lies at the intersection of Area II (Research on Education and Training) and Area III (Reseach into social integration and social exclusion in Europe), and especially in the 'effectiveness of policies and actions, European dimension and diversity' (subarea II.1) the 'positive impact of European cultural diversity' (II.1.3.4) the 'cultural differences and integration of minorities' (II.1.3.5) the 'evaluation of the impact of social integration policies' (III.4) and the 'horizontal activities and development of research infrastructures' (III. 5).

The Project has both conceptual objectives (to improve understanding of the various facets of the issue) and practical objectives (to search for solutions to ameliorate the problem). The work will thus consist in:

1. development of a fundamental terminology for research on children of immigrant origin in European countries and a characterization of the forms and models of cultural diversity and of social inclusion and integration of children of immigrant origin which define the current phenomena;
2. comparation of:

a) knowledge on concepts, methods, values and policies;
b) alternative schemes of education and family support,
c) indicators for measuring policy impact in terms of equality, inclusion and well-being;

3. experimental methodology applicable to the activities which promote well-being of ethnic minorities and disadvantaged children of immigrant origin such as:

a) tools aimed at improving understanding of the phenomernon at the European level (Database),
b) tools meant for EU and national policy makers and targeted at revising the theorical, methodological and operational approaches in their activities (Report to policy makers);
c) tools meant for professionals and operators (teachers, volunteers etc) involved in education practices (Professionals' handbook);

4. exploitation plan targeted to sensitizing school environment, institutional setting, the decision makers at the national and European level, researchers and workers in the field (Video Conference, Thematic Conference, Video and CD Rom, Web page and Information site).
