European Project On Integrated VTS Sea Environment and Interactive Data On-line Network; POSEIDON

POSEIDON will integrate Vessel Traffic Services, sea environment and interactive data on-line networks and will improve ship-ship and ship-shore communication. It supports safer and more efficient ship traffic management, more effective policing of coastal waters and a more efficient inner port supervision by the port authorities. New and advanced software tools will be made commercially available for vessel traffic and coastal management. They will include Automatic Vessel identification and Tracking using transponder technologies, anchorage/mooring management and guidance, decision support tools using integrated Geographic Information Systems and Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems, information recording and multiple sensor data fusion by correlating Radar and Transponder data. The port authorities involved include Finistere, Helsinki-Turku, Horten-Oslo, Southampton and Piraeus and the target market is global. Software to integrate Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) with external agencies for operations under routine and emergency conditions will be made commercially available. This includes access to traffic information using Internet , database access software for handling dangerous cargo in accordance with Directive 93/75/EEC HAZMAT and modelling of drifting oil spill and objects.
