Cel The objectives of the project are: (1) To propose recommendations for the presentation of information to drivers based on: understandability, usability and safety whilst driving the roles of audible and visual information harmonisation of text and symbols harmonisation with externally presented information. (2) To establish the feasibility of guidelines and standards to be adopted for in-vehicle presentation. (3) To propose any changes to the Vienna rules which appear to be of outstanding importance.Technical Approach The project will proceed in four overlapping stages: (1) Establishing the current position of legislation and relevant standards in each European country and the views of relevant actors in the ATT community of the role of standards. (2) Developing the theoretical framework and experimental techniques for assessing in-vehicle equipment interfaces. (3) Conducting static and mobile evaluations of a range of commercial and demonstrator interfaces. (4) Drawing up recommendations and guidelines for information presentation and promotingthe role of standards. Key Issues Definition of information presentation principles Recommendations for information presentation Evaluation of specific demonstrators Proposals for modifications to the Vienna Convention Proposals for European guidelines or standards for in-vehicle information presentation Expected achievements In the next 12 months the HARDIE project will: Carry out simulator and road trials to determine usability, understandability and acceptance of a series of traffic and road information signs and determine the usability and legibility of such signs when displayed on an in-vehicle screen. Develop guidelines for the presentation of navigation and route guidance information. Begin trials to determine the effects on driver performance of presenting information from a collision avoidance system in different ways. Produce a first draft of the HARDIE "Design Guidelines" handbook for display aspects of Traffic and Road Information, Navigation and Route Guidance, Collision Avoidance and Automatic Intelligent Cruise Control. Establish possible sources of information processing problems in different sources, applications and modes of information presentation. Expected Impact This project contributes directly to the ATT programme objective of improved road safety by highlighting the need for standards of information presentation which do not unduly distract drivers' from their main task of vehicle control. The proposals, guidelines and results from this project will support the New Programme's objective of assisting decision makers in their future action on implementation. The project will also help to establish common functional specifications and promote standards to meet users' needs. It will do this by promoting international compatibility and harmonisation of display presentation, and will thus contribute to the promotion of confidence in the safety of ATT implementation. Contribution to Standardisation The objectives of this project show that it is well focused on the use of standards. The project will investigate the role of standards in the area of information presentation to drivers and participate fully in the standard setting process, including close cooperation with CEN Technical Committee 278 WG10.
