The EU's programme for Scientific and Technological Cooperation with Developing Countries (INCO-DC) has selected 128 proposals for funding as a result of its final call for proposals. The INCO-DC programme funds cooperative projects involving partners from the EU and developing countries, with the aim, in particular, of assisting developing countries in improving their scientific capabilities. A total of 1,020 proposals were submitted in response to the April 1997 call (OJ No C 117 of 15.4.1997) which closed in September 1997. The total funding requested amounted to ECU 631 million. The 128 projects selected will receive a total of ECU 66 million. The proposals selected were in the following areas of the INCO-DC work programme: Area C.1: Sectors of general importance: - 1.1: Sustainable management of renewable natural resources (41 selected from 384 proposals); - 1.2: Sustainable management of agricultural and agro-industrial production (37 selected from 315 proposals); - 1.3:Health (47 selected from 235 proposals); Area C.2: Additional sectors of mutual interest: - 2.1: Information technologies (66 proposals received, final selection not yet completed); - 2.3: Biotechnology (no proposals selected from nine received); - 2.4: Materials and production technologies (three selected from 11).
