Supporting the activities of the EEA
The European Environment Agency (EEA) was established to provide the Community and the Member States with objective, reliable and comparable information on the environment. In order to provide support to the process of harmonisation of state-of-the-environment (SoE) reporting in the member countries of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and in the countries participating in the PHARE programme, the EEA have published an invitation to tender. The main tasks of the contract will include the following: - To compile a structured overview of questions to be answered by state-of-the-environment reports on a national and an international level; - To map a selection of existing data flows between countries and international organisations, for data not gathered by the European topic centres of the EEA; - To update the EEA overview of issues and indicators in European state-of-the-environment reports and to extend the system with a selection of reports from international organisations relevant for state-of-the-environment reporting; - To organise two meetings of the expert group on guidelines and reporting in 1999 to discuss topics such as the results of the investigations and to report on these meetings. The aim of the European Environment Agency to arrive at the required harmonisation of state-of-the-environment reporting is not to issue strict guidelines, but to work together with the member countries to develop common frameworks. This is considered to be beneficial in that it will facilitate consistent reporting on the environment on a European scale and contribute to better comparability of national SoE reports.
