Standardising learning technologies and educational multimedia software
A standardisation mandate has recently been granted to the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) in the domain of learning technologies and educational multimedia software by the European Commission and the Senior Officials Group for Information Technologies Standardisation (SOGITS). A cooperation framework, in the form of a memorandum of understanding, will also be put in place to complement the CEN activity. This will enable key players to identify common issues related to the further deployment of information and communication technologies based learning services. The memorandum provides details on the process of standardisation in learning technologies and the approaches to producing results within its framework. Details are also provided on the procedures for signing the memorandum and participation. Those interested in signing the memorandum of understanding which is entitled "Multimedia access to education and training in Europe - A partnership for a common approach to the production and delivery of learning technologies, content and services" are invited to sign before 18 November 1998. The signatories will then be invited to a plenary meeting in February 1999 which will be held in parallel with the first meeting of the CEN workshop on standards for learning technologies.
