CEPI comments on Europe's position in the pulp and paper industry
CEPI, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, has published two reports in conjunction with the 'EU forest-based and related industries into the third millennium congress', which was held in Helsinki, Finland, in early July. The first report lays out CEPI's official submission to the European Commission in preparation for its communication on the competitiveness of European forest-based industries. The communication, from DG III of the Commission, is the first report of its kind for the forest-based industries and reflects the importance of this industry which generates a high income for Europe. The report traces the key challenges for global competitiveness of the European pulp and paper industry, including the impact of the Information Society and environmental and sustainable development. It then goes on to suggest what actions could be taken to promote sustainable competitiveness of this industry. The second report provides an executive summary of the 1998 competitiveness study of the European pulp, paper and board manufacturing industry, and includes a 1999 addendum. CEPI and the European Commission collaborated on this study, examining the structure, functioning, and competitiveness of the industry and explored how public policies can support competitiveness.
