The text of the EU-Russia Cooperation Agreement for science and technology has now been published in the Official Journal. The Agreement will enter into force following the completion of ratification procedures by both sides, expected in the coming months.

Under the terms of the Agreement Russian researchers may participate in the EU's research programmes while EU researchers may participate in corresponding Russian research activities. The areas to be covered include the following:

- environment and climate research, including earth observation;
- biomedical and health research;
- agriculture, forestry and fisheries research;
- industrial and production technologies;
- materials research and metrology;
- non-nuclear energy;
- transportation;
- Information Society technologies;
- social sciences research;
- science and technology policy;
- training and mobility of scientists.

An overall Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Russia has recently entered into force, and one of its provisions is for the negotiation of 'specific arrangements' in the field of science and technology, hence this Agreement.
