The Joint Research Centre's Institute for Health and Consumer Protection has recently announced a call for tenders for a study contract on 'pre-validation and validation of metabolically competent in vitro systems for detecting induction of drug metabolising enzymes'. ECVAM, the JRC's unit for validation of biomedical testing methods, aims to promote the scientific and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods which are of importance to the biosciences and which reduce, refine or replace the use of laboratory animals. The main objectives of the prevalidation/validation study are to identify tests capable of discriminating a compound's potency to induce drug-metabolising enzymes as an alternative to the in-vivo animal model, for the examination of the induction potential of new chemical entities and to provide an integrated testing strategy for the eventual consideration by the regulatory authorities.
