The Council's common position on the deliberate release of GMOs
The Council of the European Community's common position on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment has been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities. This sets out general provisions for future legislation regarding the deliberate release of GMOs in accordance with the 'precautionary principle' to protect human health and the environment. The Council adopted this position in December 1999, with a view to agreeing a Directive with the European Parliament.
