EU-funded research projects from a diversity of fields including medicine, agriculture and telecommunications, are now being showcased as part of the organisers' aim to reflect a vision of Europe devoted to 'human kind, nature and technology. Shortly after its opening, EXPO 2000 hosted World Environment day, when the European Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström, met with schoolchildren from all over Europe as part of a UN initiative to encourage greater environmental awareness and action. 'I wish to give a human face to environmental issues and motivate people to be active become active in environmental protection,' said the Commissioner. A number of events related to the environment and pertinent to European research will be held in and around the European pavilion over the coming months.
