The Education and Culture Directorate-General requires studies for combating doping in sport in Europe. To help provide an overall view of the reasons why doping practices develop, the Commission intends issuing three studies with the following objectives: - analyse the structural causes explaining the rise in doping practices in sport, such as the overcommercialisation of sport, sponsor and media pressure or excessive competition; - examine the question of protecting young athletes. Sports organisations are taking on athletes at an increasingly young age, leading to the appearance of various problems: the consequences of doping on the careers of young sportsmen and women or the physical and psychological consequences in adolescent life; - analyse the mechanisms for communication and making the general public more aware about doping, by describing a communication strategy on a European scale.
