The cost of decommissioning
Tenders are invited by the Environment Directorate-General for a study on the development of methodologies for cost calculations and financial planning of decommissioning operations. The financial assessment and funding for future decommissioning activities are main parameters in many contextual frames, such as the opening of the European electricity market or the national nuclear research programmes slow down, says the Commission. The enlargement process of the European Union and the subsequent agreements on the closure of obsolete nuclear facilities in the candidate countries has quickly developed the need for reliable and transparent cost-calculation methods and strategies for financial planning of dismantling operations. A clear understanding of the problems and existing methodologies is lacking at regulatory and operational level in the applicant countries. The work programme will therefore focus on the development of a methodology for cost calculations and financial planning of decommissioning operations by the transfer of Western know-how in this field.
