And the winner is...
The identity of the winner of the 'young scientists contest' organised by the European Union, will be revealed in Amsterdam at the final of the contest on 19 to 23 September. An initiative of the European Commission, the contest is part of the Improving human potential programme, part of the European Union's Fifth Framework programme (FP5) The contest, for which entries must have been submitted by the end of the first week of June of the year concerned, involves a jury of a president and 14 scientists of international standing who judge the entries in the following disciplines - biological sciences - chemistry - Earth science - engineering - information/computer science - mathematics and physics The general criteria for the judging process are originality, thoroughness, clarity, quality and ability to discuss the project. The prizes for the winners are three first prizes of 5000 euro, three second prizes of 3000 euro and three third prizes of 1500 euro. The jury can also nominate deserving winners to represent the European Union at forthcoming events such as the Stockholm international youth science seminar, or to join distinguished scientists and researchers on projects organised by the European Commission such as, among others, the European Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy or the European Patent Office in Munich Germany.
