Brightest young scientists rewarded
The results of the 12th EU Contest for Young Scientists were rewarded in Amsterdam 23 September. 85 science students from 35 countries attended the science exhibition at the New Metropolis science and technology centre in Amsterdam, along with Achilleas Mitsos, Director-General for Directorate-General Research, Mr Timmermans, Member of the Dutch Parliament, and five Nobel laureates. The first prizes were awarded to a Polish student for the investigation of dinosaur tracks, a British trio for the design of a disposable sample device for the extraction of cells from fermenters, and a Georgian student for formulation of a bat protection plan. The contest is part of the Improving Human Potential Programme, run by the Research Directorate-General. The Commission aims to encourage and highlight young people's interest in science through the contest, by inviting them to play an active part in research. 'The future of Europe's science and technology is in the hands - or rather, heads, of science students such as the contestants", said Commissioner Busquin. 'It is my intention to see that young people are encouraged to pursue scientific careers. Investing in the next generation of researchers is effectively investing in our future.' The 13th EU Contest for Young Scientists will take place in Bergen, Norway, in September 2001.
