Existing protective measures adopted in response to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the United Kingdom should be extended until 27 March the Standing veterinary committee (SVC) has announced, supporting a European Commission proposal on the matter. In addition, the SVC says the 'huge financial consequence of general vaccination...in particular for the farming community and the trade implications,' lead it to agree with the Commission and the Member States' view that recourse to vaccination would be an inappropriate response to the outbreak. 'The dispatch of live animals, fresh meat and meat products, milk and milk products and other animal products form the UK continues to be prohibited , unless the latter are treated appropriately;' details the Commission. Further precautionary measures are also planned, including an EU wide ban of markets and assembly points for all susceptible species; a standstill for all susceptible species except for direct slaughter and direct from farm to farm, subject to authorisation by the competent authorities, and disinfection of the tyres of vehicles travelling from the UK to other Member States. The proposal will be formally adopted by the Commission in the next few days and reviewed at the veterinary committee's next meeting, which is scheduled for 20 and 21 March.
