Controlling tuberculosis
The European Commission has given prior information of a call for tenders to assist the implementation of a programme to prevent and control tuberculosis. Tuberculosis prevention and control will focus on the threat to health currently represented by tuberculosis by piloting the introduction of a new approach to combating tuberculosis in Ukraine The approach, which is recommended by the WHO (World Health Organisation) is a directly-observed, short course treatment, known as DOTS. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is also funding a pilot site. The results of these pilots will be closely monitored by the World Bank, which has a major TB and AIDS loan in the pipeline. The maximum budget for the project will be 2 million euro. The provisional start date for the contract is 15 October 2001.
