Introduction of sulphur free fuels to encourage automotive technology research
Sulphur-free petrol is to become mandatory in EU Member States from 2009, following a political agreement by the EU Environment Council on 12 December. The move is expected to encourage the further optimisation of new automotive technologies. From 1 January 2005, the introduction of sulphur free petrol and diesel in every Member State will become obligatory. From 1 January 2009 the use of sulphur free petrol will be mandatory. It is expected that sulphur free diesel will also become mandatory from that date, although this will be confirmed by a Commission review before the end of 2005. 'Sulphur free fuels will speed the introduction of the latest fuel efficient technologies in cars and other vehicles. This will significantly reduce emissions of carbon dioxide - the most important greenhouse gas. In addition, these fuels will help clean up the emissions of older, more polluting vehicles and improve air quality for people throughout the European Union,' said Margot Wallström, EU Environment Commissioner.
