Commission funds new high speed network project
The European Commission has granted 17 million euro to an Internet project entitled '6net', which aims to test a number of elements of high speed Internet connection. Using the latest Internet protocol, IP version 6 (IPv6), the project will bring together 30 academic and commercial organisations from across Europe to look at optimising the use of bandwidth. Specific elements which will be tested include security, routing and domain name server (DNS) and multicast, which allows multiple users within a single location to a connection via the use of just one signal. The project will initially involve nine countries and once all elements have been tested will see the construction and finalisation of the network.
