President of University rectors' conference calls for new funds to support European research careers
The President of the German University rectors' conference (HRK), Dr Klaus Landfried, has called for new funds to support European research careers and the strengthening of EU funding programmes for young scientists. Dr Landfried spoke on the first day of a two day annual meeting of the HRK, which he said he hoped would look 'beyond Europe'. He called for targeted efforts to make scientific careers international from the very beginning, the strengthening of EU funding programmes for young researchers and new funds to support European research careers. 'We need more European postgraduate colleges, more joint postgraduate courses and more jointly managed graduation systems,' added Dr Landfried. 'Through a reorganisation of our 'internal affairs' we want to make 'Higher Education made in Europe' into a quality label, which will make us competitive against other players, above all the USA and Australia,' said Dr Landfried. Dr Landfried also called on Germany to shed its outdated structures in order to keep up with internationalisation and international agreements.
