MEPs table e-democracy resolution
MEPs from eight different parties have tabled a motion for a resolution to introduce e-democracy in the EU. The proponent of the initiative, Italian MEP Marco Cappato, and 54 other MEPs state that 'democracy is the number one problem for Europe.' They have asked for the EU Treaties to be amended to allow citizens to use the Internet to vote in European Parliamentary elections, watch meetings of the EU institutions, make complaints to the Ombudsman and access the European Court of Justice. On 14 May, MEPs also approved an annex to the Parliament's rules of procedure setting out the official documents sent to the Parliament, including research studies and committee reports, that should be available to the public from June 2002.
