Surface transport
The European Commission has published a call for proposals for surface transport (1B) under the Sixth Framework Programme's 'Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems' thematic priority. This is one of the areas covered by the 'Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area' specific programme. A number of instruments will be used to fund projects in this area (point 6 in the work programme): integrated projects, networks of excellence, specific targeted projects, coordination actions and specific support actions. Proposers are advised to consult the work programme for details of which instruments are applicable for which topics. This call covers the following topics: - Future generation of clean and economical engines for cars; - Ultra low emissions for marine propulsion; - Virtual institute on advanced combustion to develop clean power trains for road transport; - Virtual centre for technology innovation and knowledge management in the railways sector; - Integrated design and manufacturing in shipyards for developing the most competitive production environment in the world; - Enhanced safety and capacity of European railways infrastructure; - Enhanced vehicle-infrastructure interaction for an efficient European rail system; - Centre of competence for structural analysis of ships with improved safety, environmental behaviour and comfort; - Innovative vehicle concepts for the future European rail system; - Safety for European roads; - Virtual centre of excellence for enhanced road passive safety.
