There is a growing awareness and use of broadband services in the UK, according to findings published on 27 January by Oftel, the regulator for the UK telecommunications industry. The results show that 84 per cent of UK Internet users know more about the available broadband services and the benefits they can offer. This contrasts greatly to results from February 2002 where just over 50 per cent of Internet customers were knowledgeable about broadband. However, UK Internet users are not only more knowledgeable about broadband services but are also more satisfied with the services they get as the results show that nine out of ten households are happy with their Internet service provider. According to the report, almost 30 000 new users per week are subscribing to broadband services in the UK, which now boasts more than 1.4 million broadband users nationwide. The report also shows that one in ten of UK homes with Internet access use broadband services and the average household spends around nine hours every week online. 'These findings are great news for the UK. It is wonderful to see the joint work of government and industry in raising awareness of the benefits of broadband really paying off. I look forward to seeing this trend continue,' said Stephen Timms, UK eCommerce Minister.
