The Commission has decided to grant financial support to the Community reference laboratory (CRL) for the evaluation of a new classical swine fever discriminatory test. Classical swine fever is one of the most serious pig diseases, having caused serious economic losses in the Community in the last decade. Marker vaccines against classical swine fever have been developed, which could be used as an additional tool for the eradication of the disease. However, the implementation of such markers is seriously hampered by a lack of a reliable discriminatory test able to distinguish between vaccinated animals and infected ones. However, there has been a breakthrough in recent times with the development of a new discriminatory test. Further independent evaluation is now needed in order that the test may be approved by the Commission. According to the decision text, financing such tests at EU level is essential in order to ensure better regulation of classical swine fever and the eventual development of Community legislation on the disease. To this end, the decision stipulates that the CRL shall carry out the validation of the test in cooperation with national reference laboratories for classical fever and shall provide the Commission with the results of this work no later than 30 June.
