Research and information services for UK dairy sector
The European Commission has approved an initiative of the United Kingdom Government designed to promote research and information services in the dairy sector.Aid will be provided by means of a tax levied on milk produced in Great Britain to set up the Milk Development Council for the purposes of carrying out research and development work in the dairy sector and of compiling information for the benefit of the sector as a whole.The Milk Development Council is to take over the funding of certain activities in this area currently financed by the Milk Marketing Boards when the latter are dissolved. It is envisaged that expenditure will be approximately ECU 5.7 million.The tax which will finance these activities will not apply to imported products. It will be collected by dairy companies and other first-hand purchasers at the point of sale.
