The second call for proposals for the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of telematics applications of common interest (1994-1998) was published in March 1995 (OJ No C 64 of 15.3.1995 p. 12). The results of this call for proposals with regard to the "Language engineering" sector of the programme are now available. A total of 21 proposals were received under this sector, of which 20 were accepted for evaluation. These involved over 200 participants from 20 countries. The call was succesful in attracting the interest of the private sector, including IT companies, telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers, publishers and companies specializing in speech technology and natural language processing. Many leading research institutes and laboratories also participated in the call. User and industrial participation was high (around 40% of participation), and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were well represented (54%). Following evaluation, four projects have been accepted for funding. These are: - SPEECHDAT II: Speech databases for creation of voice driven teleservices; - EURO-WORDNET: Building wordnets with semantic relations for several European languages; - PAROLE: Deriving and normalizing lexica and corpora, mainly from existing sources; - INTERVAL: Interlinguistic terminology validation. The total funding to be allocated to these projects is ECU 7,200,000.
