Researchers from the EU and Canada can now enjoy reciprocal access to most areas of each others' research programmes, following approval, by the Council of Ministers of the European Union, of the agreement signed in July 1995 by Sir Leon Brittan, European Commissioner responsible for external relations, and Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. André Ouellet. The agreement covers cooperation in the following areas: - Agriculture and fisheries; - Medical and health research; - Non-nuclear energy; - Environment, including earth observation; - Forestry; - Information technologies; - Communication technologies; - Telematics for economic and social development; - Mineral processing. Other areas may subsequently be added to the list. The agreement allows reciprocal participation on a project by project basis, but does not provide for any transfer of funds, in cases where there is mutual benefit in particular projects. Nuclear research cooperation is not covered by this agreement, but may become the subject of a separate Canada-EURATOM agreement, which is in the early stages of preparation, as is the renewal of the recently-expired cooperation agreement on radioactive waste management research.
