Conclusion of Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with Uzbekistan
Negotiations on a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the Republic of Uzbekistan were concluded on 29 April 1996. This is a mixed agreement between the European Communities and their Member States and Uzbekistan, and will last for ten years initially. The Agreement establishes a political dialogue, and covers trade, investment-related questions and cooperation in a wide range of civil areas. It contains a clause allowing it to be suspended if there is a breach of the essential elements underlying the Agreement, such as respect for democracy, human rights and the principles of the market economy. The Agreement covers trade in goods, labour conditions, establishment and operation of companies, cross-border supply of services, payments and capital, competition, intellectual, industrial and commercial property protection, legislative cooperation, economic cooperation, cooperation on human rights and democracy, cooperation in combating illegal activities and illegal immigration, cultural cooperation and financial cooperation. The Agreement is one of a series to be negotiated with the states of the former Soviet Union, and will come into force following its ratification by both sides.
