The European Commission, DG XI, has published and open invitation to tender for a study contract to assess the environmental and economic impacts of waste from the textile industry and post-consumer use of textiles. The study contract, which is to cover the 15 Member States of the European Union, will address the following areas: - a) Defining the state-of-the-art of textile industry activities and their resulting wastes; - b) Identifying the sources of post-consumer wastes from textiles; - c) Characterizing both quantitatively and qualitatively the wastes generated and their management at manufacturing and post-consumer levels; - d) Identifying areas and solutions for the improvement of the management of such wastes from preventing their generation to reducing their hazardousness; - e) Assessing the environmental and economic impacts of an improved management of such wastes, in the context of the European Community Environment Policy and the Community Strategy for Waste Management.
