The European Commission, DG XI, has published and open invitation to tender for a study contract to assess the environmental and economic impacts of waste from the textile industry and post-consumer use of textiles.

The study contract, which is to cover the 15 Member States of the European Union, will address the following areas:

- a) Defining the state-of-the-art of textile industry activities and their resulting wastes;
- b) Identifying the sources of post-consumer wastes from textiles;
- c) Characterizing both quantitatively and qualitatively the wastes generated and their management at manufacturing and post-consumer levels;
- d) Identifying areas and solutions for the improvement of the management of such wastes from preventing their generation to reducing their hazardousness;
- e) Assessing the environmental and economic impacts of an improved management of such wastes, in the context of the European Community Environment Policy and the Community Strategy for Waste Management.

The study must be completed within 12 months.
