The European Commission, DGs XII, VI and XIV, has published a call for proposals for RTD activities under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (including agro-industry, food technologies, forestry, aquaculture and rural development) (FAIR) (1994-1998).

Eligible parties are invited to submit proposals for RTD activities (RTD projects and concerted actions) in the following areas:

- Area 1: Integrated production and processing chains (industrial participation is strongly advised for proposals in this area)
. 1.1 The biomass and bioenergy chain;
. 1.2 The 'green' chemical and polymer chain;
. 1.3 The forestry-wood chain;

- Area 4: Agriculture, forestry and rural development (selected tasks - see tender documentation for further information);

- Area 5: Fisheries and aquaculture (selected tasks - see tender documentation for further information);

The need for synergy and coherence between the various areas covered by the call is underlined in the call and explained in detail in the FAIR work programme and information package.

Proposals for concerted actions and thematic networks are also invited for:

- Ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA): shared-cost actions (RTD projects, thematic networks), concerted actions, in all the areas of the work programme including Area 2 - "Scaling-up and processing methodologies" and Area 3 - "Generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods";
- Demonstration activities: shared-cost actions (demonstration projects) in the above-mentioned areas, including Area 2 - "Scaling-up and processing methodologies" and Area 3 - "Generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods".

The work programme (in particular the 1996 annex to the work programme), detailed information about procedures for the submission of proposals (information package) and a copy of the model contract that will be drawn up for the successful proposals are available on request from the Commission's services. The description of work undertaken in previous and related programmes are also available on request.
