Tiny crystals help industry

Understanding the development of nanocrystalline materials has vital consequences for many industrial applications. These versatile compounds have uses as varied as medical implants and magnetic transformers.

Production of nanocrystals is a two step operation with irregularly shaped metallic glass's going on to form nanocrystalline alloys. These alloys possess various desirable features such as iron magnetism, high electrical resistivity and high strength. It is important to discover the details of how nanocrystals are produced, so that their structure and properties can be altered to suit the needs of the marketplace. Examples of nanocrystalline compounds in action can be found in biocompatible medical implants, corrosive resistant coatings and transformers in Integrated Services Digital Networks commonly known as ISDN's.
