Sustainable development methodology

A new and necessary perspective with regard to production, consumption and disposal has arisen. The AEOLOS (An End-Of-Life OF product Systems) project has developed an integrated methodology and tool set related to environmental performance, costs and social aspects.

A major trait that constitutes this methodology is its advanced flexible features which have the ability to assess the maximum potential of sustainable development. What's more is this is possible in all three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economical and social. Rather than actually making the decisions, this software has been designed to provide decision support for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) but it is not limited only to that. This methodology can be implemented in various waste management streams including packaging, end of life vehicles, batteries, tyres, etc. This is because the methodology is used as support in the decision-making process in a step-by step manner. Thus the user is able to assess End Of Life (EOL) scenarios within one or multiple dimension. That is to say decision makers formulating policy at local authority, regional, national and EU levels will be supported when determining, analysing and evaluating the most appropriate EOL treatment option. The support will encompass an environmental, economic and social perspective for their geographical areas of concern. One of its major applications comes in the form of an internet version and can serve as a means to market the software to the end-users. While the end-users are most likely to be consultants, they may also include public readers, authorities, industries and students. The features highlighted in the web-based software that will boost performance include flexibility, portability and maintenance. Once this methodology begins to circulate, it may very well demonstrate its impact at environmental, economic and social levels.
