Expanding the power of knowledge
The EU's ONTO-LOGGING project set out to lay the foundations for the next generation knowledge management (KM) systems, primarily through the use of novel KM platform. The project succeeded in creating a number of web-based tools associated with user capabilities and ontologies. The Ontology Knowledge Evaluator (OKE) allows analysis to be conducted on different ontologies and their user profiles. In addition the User Profile Editor (UPE) is another servlet web-based tool providing ontology-management capabilities as well as automatic updates of user profiles. The UPE can make a number of inferences relating to the activity of the user on his/her behavioural patterns (linked to the KM system). Both the OKE and UPE tools can be used within corporate environments in combination as well as stand-alone features. Laboratory prototypes of both have been developed and can be used for demonstration purposes. It is envisaged that new KM systems will facilitate start-up companies access the necessary knowledge and enable corporations to cope with the vast body of knowledge that is available today.
