The European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender concerning remediation strategies for territories contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl accident. The contract will be for an evaluation of optimized remediation strategies for the restoration of contaminated territories resulting from the Chernobyl accident mainly dealing with agricultural lands. The scope of the study will cover the contaminated territories around Chernobyl giving rise to extra doses to the population higher than 1 m Sv/a. This study is complementary to several previous ones and will focus on the following: - Relationship between model doses and measured doses; - Identification of possible specific counter-measures for towns; - Evolution of the size of the contaminated territories; - Collection of data for additional representative settlements; - Determination of the time-dependence of agricultural counter-measures; - Impact of collective farms on exported doses. The study must be completed within 18 months. Studies must be conducted in close cooperation with the Commission services (DG XI C/3), and must take into account the relevant development of other studies relating to the areas under consideration. In addition, the involvement of CIS experts and/or organizations in the implementation of the different studies is a prerequisite. Six-monthly progress reports and a final report will have to be submitted. Tender documentation may be obtained from: European Commission DG XI - Environment, nuclear safety and civil protection Mr. B.
