The European Commission, DG XII, has published a call for proposals for RTD activities within the specific RTD programme for Marine Science and Technology (MAST). Proposals are invited for RTD actions in the following areas of the MAST Work Programme: - Area A: Marine science: . A.1: Marine systems research: . A.1.1: Mechanisms of the circulation and exchange of water masses; - Area B: Strategic marine research: . B.1: Coastal and shelf seas research: . B.1.1: Coastal processes and morphodynamics; . B.1.3: Methods for monitoring, forecasting and management of shelf seas and coastal zones; . B.2: Coastal engineering and natural defences: . B.2.2: Remote sensing; - Area C: Marine technology: . C.2: Advanced systems: . C.2.1: Unmanned platforms and autonomous systems; . C.2.2: Oceanographic measurement and sampling equipment; - Area D: Supporting initiatives: . D.3: Modelling, ocean data management and quality control for research and operational applications. Proposals should clearly explain how they will address the objective of building European capacity in operational forecasting of the seas and oceans. The priorities to be addressed are: - Improvement of operational stimulation of physical, chemical, biological and sedimentological processes; - Improvement of technologies and methodologies used to optimize the selection of sites suitable for monitoring, and the gathering, handling and processing of data collected at these sites; - The methods used to assimilate observations in numerical simulation models. A crucial requirement is to develop simultaneously the observational skills, integrated modelling and the coordinated handling of data and information flows. Special emphasis should be given to end-user needs emerging from currently available operational marine forecasting systems. Research activities will be addressed, in general, by shared cost actions and concerted actions. Community financial support can be made available to facilitate participation by entities from the Central and Eastern European countries, the former Soviet Union and developing countries. Proposers should obtain copies of the latest editions of the Information Package and Work Programme from the Commission before preparing proposals. All correspondence relating to this call, including completed proposals, should be addressed to: European Commission DG XII - Science, research and development MAST programme - Unit D/3 200 rue de la Loi (SDME 7/80) B-1049 Brussels Fax +32-2-2963024 Documentation relating to the call can also be found in the Document Library section of the CORDIS WWW server, at: http://cordis.europa.eu/(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)
