The General Assembly of INTAS, the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union, approved, on 17 June 1997, support for 332 projects. These projects were selected following the INTAS 1996 call for proposals, announced on 15 December 1996, which closed on 2 April 1997. The projects selected cover all scientific fields: from evaluation of the investment climate and the socio-economic situation in Russian regions to investigation of bacteria causing gastric cancer and equipping Russian and Ukrainian telescopes to measure sources of cosmic radiation. A total of 2,373 proposals, requesting funding of ECU 133 million, were received and evaluated by independent experts from INTAS member states and the NIS (New Independent States of the former Soviet Union). This "peer review" was followed by an evaluation by the INTAS Council of Scientists. The 332 projects selected also include 17 projects selected in the framework of phase II of the joint call with Kazakhstan. In addition to the newly selected 332 projects, INTAS is currently supporting 1,526 joint research projects, from open calls launched in 1993 and 1994, and the three joint calls from 1995 with RFBR (Russian Foundation for Basic Research), Kazakhstan and Ukraine. The General Assembly also discussed the INTAS strategy up to 1998, in the context of the European Community's discussion on the Fifth RTD Framework Programme. An open INTAS call will be organized in Autumn 1997 and will remain open for the submission of proposals for six months. This open call will be combined with jointly financed activities with several governmental and non-governmental institutions in the NIS and Member States. The overall financial contribution of INTAS to these new activities will be ECU 17 million. The 1997 call will also contain special incentives for the participation of young scientists. In order to promote this call, special targeted information activities will be launched in the Member States and in the NIS in the autumn.
