Innovation outputs in European industry
A report on "Innovation outputs in European industry" has been published by the European Innovation Monitoring System (EIMS). The report is based on analyses of the results of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) conducted in 1993. The CIS sets out eight "innovation output indicators" intended to help provide an indications of the innovative capacity of businesses in the European Union. These are as follows: - Sales from new products (SNP); - Sales of incrementally changed products (SNPInc); - Sales of radicaly changed products (SNPRad); - Export sales from new products (ENP); - Export sales of incrementally changed products (ENPInc); - Export sales of radicaly changed products (ENPRad); - Sales from innovative products new to the firm (SNPFir); - Sales from innovative products new to the industry (SNPInd). The present report attempts, on the basis of these indicators, to map the structure and pattern of innovation outputs across European countries and industries, and to examine how variations in innovation otput relate to firm size and export performance. The role of industry specific versus country-specific factors in shaping the rate and direction of innovation is also explored.
