Polymer films give a boost to industry

Many industries have been limited by the inability of existing technology to create nanostructured polymer films. New nanotech applications may make this a problem of the past.

The EU-funded 'Nanostructured waterborne polymer films with outstanding properties' (Napoleon) project developed radical new products through a novel technology platform. A controlled nanostructure was created without the emission of organic solvents or residual monomer. Scientists from the Napoleon project developed a new type of polymer film, which also complies with European directives on solvent emissions. The breakthrough was the result of using waterborne nanoparticles with carefully controlled structures acting as building blocks for the films. The project formed the basis for creating a platform for the development of new products in the coatings, adhesives, cosmetics and paper and textile industries. The film's groundbreaking properties include good adhesion to porous substrates, increased hardness, strength and resistance to wear. Additional properties included greater impermeability to gases and improved fire resistance. A wide range of revolutionary nanoparticles can be created as a result of the Napoleon initiative, which can help European industry to compete even more effectively in the global market place.
