Community action programme on health monitoring
A Community action programme on health monitoring was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on 30 June 1997. Adopted within the framework for action in the field of public health (1997-2001), the programme will run from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 2001. The programme aims to establish a Community health monitoring system which will allow the measuring of health status, trends and determinants throughout the Community. The system will facilitate the planning, monitoring and evaluation of Community programmes and actions and provide Member States with appropriate health information to make comparisons and to support their national health policies. The actions to be implemented under the programme fall under three main headings: - Establishment of Community health indicators; - Development of a Community-wide network for sharing health data; - Analyses and reporting. The programme, which will be open to participation by third countries (EFTA, the associated states of Central and Eastern Europe, Malta and Cyprus), will dispose of a budget of ECU 13.8 million for the five-year period.
