The European Science Foundation (ESF) is offering up to four awards for the organization, in 1998, of European research workshops in any field of the humanities. Launched by the Foundation's Standing Committee for the Humanities (SCH), this new workshop scheme has been designed to encourage researchers from across Europe to put forward innovative and creative ideas for European research. Funding is available to support both 'one-off' workshops addressing specific goals and 'exploratory' workshops at which ideas for European collaboration can be examined in depth and plans developed for future actions. Applications are invited concerning any emerging field of humanities research, but in making the awards, the Committee will pay particular attention to the question of whether the proposal merits support at a European, as opposed to a national, level. In addition, the SCH is particularly interested in supporting initiatives that aim at bridging gaps, both disciplinary and regional, between areas of research currently operating at different levels of sophistication. Examples of possible themes, already identified by the SCH, include: the construction and transmission of knowledge and values; intercultural contacts; arts and literature; the ethics of science; long-term ecological change; and research infrastructure needs in the Humanities. Applicants for funding should submit four copies of their applications in English, providing: a summary of the proposed research topic (maximum 1000 words): the programme of the planned workshop (maximum of 20 participants); and an estimate of costs in French Francs. The maximum budget for a workshop for 20 participants is FF 100,000, with an average reimbursement of FF 5,000 per participant. An additional maximum of FF 10,000 may be included to support editing of a final report. Applications should be sent to Dr. Vuokko Lepistö-Kirsilä Scientific Secretary to the Standing Committee for the Humanities European Science Foundation 1 quai Lezay-Marnésia F-67080 Strasbourg Cedex Tel. +33-3-88767126; Fax +33-3-88370532 E-mail: humanities@esf.org Further information may be found on the ESF's World Wide Web homepage, at: http://www.esf.org/index.html(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)
