X-rays go high-tech

More sophisticated X-ray imaging could mean increasingly detailed imaging and less exposure to harmful rays. New solutions have already been proposed in this direction.

X-ray technology has been invaluable to medical diagnosis, but it is not free of health hazards. Cutting-edge X-ray technology, however, may be able to produce much more accurate images and with smaller X-ray doses, decreasing our dependence on multiple X-ray shots and providing more in-depth information. With this in mind, the EU-funded project 'Intelligent imaging sensors for industry, health and security' (I-IMAS) worked on adaptive X-ray solutions that control online exposure to enhance images. The project team conceived a system that enables real-time image analysis and exposure adjustment during the procedure, focusing in particular on mammography and dental radiology. To accomplish its goals, the team first identified all the requirements needed for the system. It then pinpointed key regions in dental and mammographic images and analysed the statistical data obtained, in addition to using steering algorithms to extract crucial information. Another important component involved design and simulation of the I-IMAS sensor, followed by actual testing and manufacture of the novel sensor. A tailored data acquisition system (DAQ) was also built to extract data from 20 sensors simultaneously, before sending the results through the steering algorithm to the mechanical control system. Overall, the project comprised the three phases of system design, manufacture and testing. Once these were completed, the system proved capable of acquiring optimally exposed images with variable density, promoting much safer and more accurate imaging to date. This will come as a relief to patients who dislike X-rays and will take diagnostic healthcare one step further.
