The European Speech Communication Association (ESCA), will hold a workshop focusing on research on Speech Technology in Language Learning (STiLL) in Stockholm, Sweden, from 25 to 27 May, 1998. The Association aims to promote speech communication science and technology in a European context, in both industry and academics. Its establishment was supported by the European Commission.

The workshop will be international in scope, with each session introduced by an invited expert. Some of the speakers are partners in European programmes, for example the "Multimedia multilingual teaching and training system for speech-handicapped children", supported by the INCO-COPERNICUS programme (Scientific and technological cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the New Independent States).

Examples of topics to be covered at the workshop include:

- Second language speech learning: The role of subject and phonetic variables;
- A signal processing technique for speech visualization;
- Automatic pronunciation grading for Dutch;
- Towards the optimization of computer-based second language training;
- Enhancing speech perception of Japanese learners of English.
